Aging Parents & Adult Children: The Emotional Impact of Caregiving

Saturday, March 24 @ 1:00 PM
Kent County Public Library
Chestertown Meeting Room

As life expectancy increases and the elderly population continues to expand, many more middle-aged adults will find themselves in the role of caregiver for parents and other aging relatives at the same time they are balancing other demands of family, jobs, and social obligations.

This workshop addresses the issues of cognitive and physical decline in the elderly and the impact on the adult children who often find themselves in the role of decision-maker and caregiver.

The workshop is presented by Gail Johnston, a geriatric social worker with a degree in clinical social work from the University of Maryland. Gail has served as Director of Social Work for an adult medical day care center, for nursing and rehab facilities, and as coordinator for community based programs for seniors.

She has also worked extensively in geriatric care management, eldercare resource development, and facilitated support groups providing education for health care professionals, seniors, and their families. In the field of geriatric care management, she has developed and presented over thirty workshops on relevant topics of aging and caregiving, as well as published articles on aging in local newspapers and Web sites.
