Love Your Library Update

If you've taken a look at the Love Your Library chart in the Chestertown Branch recently, you know we've reached 38% of our fundraising goal for the Love Your Library campaign so far. We wanted to say a big "Thank you!" to all the people who have contributed to date.

For the week of November 7-13 the Hedgelawn Foundation issued a matching challenge, offering to match up to $1500 in donations given to the library's fund raising campaign during that week. Generous supporters rose to the challenge, contributing over $8200 in that one week period. Individual contributions ranged from $10 to $800, and came primarily from citizens, but also from book clubs and civic organizations. Each donation is greatly appreciated. In recognition of the swell in community support and of several large donations, the Hedgelawn Foundation increased its match to $2000. Special thanks to Judy Kohl and the Hedgelawn Foundation for their support.

The Love the Library campaign's goal is to raise $100,000 which can be achieved if 1,000 members of the community donate $100 each. Gifts of any size are gladly accepted, and it's not too late to contribute if you haven't already done so. The Love the Library campaign officially continues through December 31, but donations to the library are welcome at any time. Checks made out to KCPL may be brought in to any library branch or mailed to 408 High Street, Chestertown, MD 21620.

Thank you again to those who have donated to the Love the Library Campaign, and to our loyal patrons. Your support and encouragement throughout these difficult times are invaluable.

Hedgelawn Foundation to Offer Library Lovers Challenge

Judy Kohl, President of the Hedgelawn Foundation, has announced a challenge to the supporters of the Kent County Public Library (KCPL) to step up to the plate and participate in the "Love the Library" Campaign. The "Lovers" campaign was initiated in mid-September with an eye to reducing the library's outstanding debt and helping with the current cash flow.

A few of the donors to the Love the Library Campaign so far are, left to right: Elaine Naper, Pat Sood, Martha Holland and Francie Miller.

Although the campaign targets donors of $100 or more, donations of any amount help to put the library on sound financial footing. During the week of November 7 - 13, Hedgelawn will match donations up to a total of $1,500. "Let's see how many people will kick in, regardless of donation size," said Kohl in offering the challenge. "A visit to the Library shows how important the services and resources are that the Library offers the community during these hard economic times. The place is packed!"

She's right. The Library traditionally sees an increase in visitors in times of unemployment. The computers are available for patrons to use for job searches, to research educational opportunities and to obtain general information. The usage is intense. Books and periodicals provide information on honing skills as well as providing resources for entertainment and education.

"The library is a window to the world for many Kent countians," said Kohl. "If you as an individual can afford to buy books or own a computer, you probably can afford to contribute for the benefit of those who can't, those who truly need these services. The amount of the donation doesn't matter; ten cents is as important as ten dollars. This Library is making progress in solving its problems. We can help as citizens in giving our support to this important county resource."
