A Shelf Full of Librarians

Do you think librarians spend their days reading books and shushing people? Think again! Librarians are highly educated professionals who choose library materials, decide how to organize them, make sure that patrons can find items, help people learn new skills, provide programs for all ages, manage information online, create websites, and so much more. Check out one of these books (use the links below to place holds on any titles that interest you) and delve a little more deeply into the real world of librarianship or indulge yourself with a novel that shows the star-power of librarians!

This Book is Overdue: How Librarians and Cybrarians Can Save Us All
by Marilyn Johnson
Those who predicted the death of libraries forgot to consider that in the automated maze of contemporary life, none of us--neither the experts nor the hopelessly baffled--can get along without human help. And not just any help--we need librarians, who won't charge us by the question or roll their eyes, no matter what we ask. Who are they? What do they know? And how quickly can they save us from being buried by the digital age? This book is a romp through the ranks of information professionals and a revelation for readers burned out on the cliches and stereotyping of librarians. Here are bloggers, radicals and visionaries who fuse the tools of the digital age with their love for the written word and the enduring values of free speech, open access, and scout-badge-quality assistance to anyone in need.

FICTION
The Borrower
by Rebecca Makkai
Lucy Hull, a young children's librarian in Hannibal, Missouri, finds herself both a kidnapper and kidnapped when her favorite patron, ten- year-old Ian Drake, runs away from home. The precocious Ian is addicted to reading, but needs Lucy's help to smuggle books past his overbearing mother, who has enrolled Ian in weekly antigay classes with celebrity Pastor Bob. Lucy stumbles into a moral dilemma when she finds Ian camped out in the library after hours with a knapsack of provisions and an escape plan. Desperate to save him from Pastor Bob and the Drakes, Lucy allows herself to be hijacked by Ian. The odd pair embarks on a crazy road trip from Missouri to Vermont, with ferrets, an inconvenient boyfriend, and upsetting family history thrown in their path. But is it just Ian who is running away? Who is the man who seems to be on their tail? And should Lucy be trying to save a boy from his own parents?

But does he know how to be a hero?

Improvements and Updates to the "New & Hot" Page

Some comments on our recent Web site usability survey, brought to our attention the fact that our "New" book lists were including some very old books. Oops! Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

After a bit of digging we think we've found and corrected the problem, so you should now see only titles added to our collection within the last 2-4 months on the new book lists. While we were at it, we also updated the lists to include cover art, and added a few additional categories of new items. The Bestseller Lists have also been overhauled and should be working better than ever. We hope you like the improvements.

We have lots of new books, audiobooks, movies, music and more showing up at the library every day. So, we have the New & Hot page on our Web site devoted to showing you what's new to the library, what's coming soon, and what's currently on the New York Times Bestseller lists. These lists link directly into our catalog so you can easily place requests for the books you want, and get a call when they're ready for you to pick up at the circulation desk.

Collection Locations Update

Some more of our collection has shifted around as our contractors begin site work.

Adult material:
All audiovisual (DVDs, Music CDs, Audiobooks) have been moved over to the magazine section by the circulation desk.

We are in the process of moving Adult Fiction into the old Children's section, which is also where the Reference desk will be for now. There are signs on the end of each shelving unit that describe its contents.

As of now, we have no plans to move Biography or Oversize, but please do not cross the tape into the construction area -- ask a staff member to retrieve the book for you.

Children's material:
The Yellow Building has selected Easy Fiction & Nonfiction, all Ready to Read titles, selected Juvenile & Young Adult fiction, and Juvenile audiovisual. Juvenile Nonfiction & the remainder of Juvenile Fiction are still in the main library. Remaining Easy books are in storage (ask a staff member if you want a specific title).

Yes, there are computers in the Yellow Building! We have two laptops set up for children's use, please ask a staff member to get one for you. We also have an Early Literacy Station over there for younger children.

Please call 410-778-3636 if you have any questions or concerns.

New Movies, Music, & Audiobooks

Music CDs
Our long neglected music collection is being rejuvenated. We've just added dozens of new music CDs to the collection, both popular and classic. Check out the display on top the first fiction shelf in the Chestertown Branch. And, in case you never noticed it before, the more permanent display case for music CDs is located against one end of the same shelf.

Online Music
We now provide music that can be streamed or downloaded from online through Alexander Street Press. Listening at home or in the library is paid for by the library for library card holders. You can even create your own playlists online for free. Downloading is a small fee to you. We offer the "Classical Music Library," "Smithsonian Global Sound" collection of folk music, and the "African American Song" collection. Please let us know what you think of this new service, so we can better evaluate its worth to our patrons. From our home page, click the "Music" image, to get here.

Audiobooks
We've also added more than 50 new audiobook titles in the past few weeks, and they're going like hotcakes. These are hot off the press popular fiction and non-fiction titles, read aloud for you on CD. The quality and popularity of this format has greatly increased in the last few years. If you haven't tried a book on CD recently or at all, give it a shot and see what the buzz is all about. They're great for long car trips or for the busy person working on other things.

DVDs
Last, but not least, we continue to offer popular movies and TV series on DVD. Many are available as early as their first day released on DVD. And we're adding to our collection of educational DVDs as well. Check with us before buying or renting. Our borrowing period for DVDs is a full week, with extensions possible when no one else is waiting.

Finding It All
We put many of the new items on display, so browsing in the branches is very popular. But you can also look for titles in the online catalog, and place holds if desired. You can search from our regular catalog page, but you may find you prefer to use the special search feature which is designed to allow you to browse Movie, Music, and Audiobook titles, or perform a power search for more precise control of your search results and limit by format. Another popular option is to click the Good Books link on our home page. This takes you to regularly updated lists of the latest additions to our various collections including Fiction, Nonfiction, Biography, Large Print, Audio Books, DVDs, and Music, as well as a list of items Coming Soon (purchased but not yet arrived).

Enjoy!

"The Secret of Staying Married" from Judith Viorst's book entitled I'm Too Young to Be Seventy and Other Delusions, Call # 811.54 VIOR.

Still married after all these years?
No mystery.
We are each other's habit,
And each other's history.

~

Excerpted from "The Raven" by Edgar Allan Poe, from the book Edgar Allan Poe: poems and poetics, Call # 811.3 POE.

"Take thy beak from out my heart, and take thy form from off my door!"
Quoth the Raven "Nevermore."

~

"The Termite" a poem by Ogden Nash, found in American Wits: an anthology of light verse. Call # 811.0708 AMER.

Some primal termite knocked on wood
And tasted it, and found it good,
And that is why your Cousin May
Fell through the parlor floor today.

~

This poem, called "Why" comes from Wendell Berry's collection of poems entitled Given. This book can be found under the call number 811.54 BERR.

Why all the embarrassment
about being happy?
Sometimes I'm as happy
as a sleeping dog,
and for the same reasons,
and for others.

Global Warming: Fact or Fiction?

Perhaps you've heard of Al Gore's new book and movie, "An Inconvenient Truth"? We have that book here at the Kent County Public Library, as well as several other recent books on the topic of Global Warming.

"Field Notes from a Catastrophe: Man, Nature, and Climate Change" by Elizabeth Kolbert takes a similar approach to Gore's, warning of impending problems related to Global Warming.

On the other hand, "State of Fear" by Michael Crichton and "Meltdown: The Predictable Distortion of Global Warming by Scientists, Politicians, and the Media" by Patrick J. Michaels explain how political figures and a media out for drama have blown things out of proportion.

So, which side is right? Take a look at some of these fascinating books and decide for yourself.
