Story Time is Back!

Following a brief hiatus, story time is back, and better than ever. We now have Baby Storytime once every week for our youngest patrons. The schedule starting February 1 is:

Baby Story Time
Ages Birth-24 months
Every Tuesday at 11 AM in Chestertown. Please pre-register by calling 410-778-3636

Preschool Story Time
Ages 2-5
Tuesdays at 10 AM in Chestertown, Wednesdays at 10:30 in Rock Hall, and Thursdays at 10:30 in Galena. This is a drop in story time, no registration required.

Another Session of "Ginger & Spice"

The 11:00 AM session of the "Ginger & Spice" program scheduled for Saturday, December 11 is booked to capacity. However, we've had so many people sign up for the waiting list, we've opened up another session, scheduled for that afternoon at 1:30 PM. Register Now for the "Ginger & Spice" Program

We're having a special program on Saturday, December 11th at 11 AM. Listen to gingerbread friend stories and create a gingerbread house of your very own!!! This is a family program for young and old. Basic house material will be provided but each participant is asked to bring either a bag of candy or a box of shredded mini wheat cereal to share for decorating the houses. Please call or stop by the library to register.

The Kent County Public Library has a special event planned on November 5 for children ages 5 to 10 in tribute to Walter Wick's I Spy and Can You See What I See? books. Preschool Storytime Break (5/10 - 6/14)

There will be no Preschool Storytime in Chestertown or Galena from May 10th to June 14th as we prepare for the summer. However, we will have Baby Storytime in Chestertown on the 2nd and 3rd Tuesdays in May.

2010 Summer Reading Program to Start June 9th

SummerReading2010.png"Make a Splash -- Read!" is the theme this summer. Children will explore the world of water, water fun and pirates through stories, songs, games and other activities about oceans, rivers, lakes, and pools and the creatures that live there. The 2010 Summer Reading Program is open to young people, preschool through young adult, with programs, prize drawings, story hours, a reading club, and more. Families are invited to join the Read-to-Me portion of the program. Registration for the Summer Reading Program begins on June 9th. The Truth about The Very Hungry Caterpillar (8/1)

Summer Reading Club 2008 - Catch the Reading Bug

Hey kids! Buzz on over to the Kent County Public Library and play Catch the Reading Bug this summer (June 13-August 8). Just pick up a "Catch the Reading Bug" game board and bag of goodies at any library branch any time this summer. Do the reading at your own pace, complete the activities on the game board and turn in your coupons for prizes. Even if you can't read you are welcome to play!

Kids who complete the game will be awarded a tee shirt and will be entered into a drawing for a Playaway audiobook.

The summer reading club kick-off will be a week long celebration, featuring special guests flitting around, buggy crafts, balloons and refreshments beginning June 16th. For exact performer times check the library website calendar.

To get into the summer reading spirit, check out the "Catch the Bug" Themesong, a hip-hop rap done by Secret Agent 23 Skidoo.

Insect Inspector Institute (7/7-11)

Insect Inspector Institute is a half day "camp" for ages 7-12 at the Kent County Library Chestertown Branch. It runs 2-4 PM July 7 through July 11. Kids will explore bees, butterflies, and insects. We will have appearances by guest speakers Lisa's World "Butterflies are Magic," Local Entymologist Beth Hill, and Local Bee Keeper Bartholomew's Bees. Crafts everyday and snacks and drinks provided. Jack Gantos Visit (5/21)

Children's author Jack Gantos will be visiting the Talbot County Public Library! He has received numerous awards for his books including ALA Notable Children's Book, School Library Journal Best Book of the Year and he was a National Book Award Finalist for Young People's Literature. His newest book, I am Joey Pigza, was released in July 2007. All are welcome to this free program. Wednesday, May 21, 10 AM & 7 PM.

New - Toddler Story Times

Beginning May 13th there will be a new program for 2 and 3 year olds at the Kent County Public Library. Toddlers will have socialization and play time at 10:30 leading into story time at 11:00 am. Toddler Story Time will be the 2nd and 3rd Tuesday of the month, after Baby Story Time. We look forward to seeing you and your Toddlers at the Chestertown Library Branch.

Kids' Program: Celebrate Women in America (3/24)

Meant for ages 8-12 years, but all ages are welcome!

In honor of Maryland Women's History Month, the library will be having an historical visitor. Colonist Margaret Brent of seventeenth-century Kent Island was the first female landowner, lawyer, and the first woman to fight for the right to vote. Come meet her at the library! The Cat in the Hat to Visit Storytime (3/7)

Friday, March 7 at 10 AM. To celebrate Dr. Seuss's 104th birthday (March 2), the Cat in the Hat will come to the library to read some stories! There will also be songs and a craft.

For the Kids: Protect Those Pearly Whites (2/27)

Ages 2-6 years. As February is National Children's Dental Health Month, Judy Gaston, RN will join us for Pajama Storytime with a short program on child dental care followed by some stories. Wednesday, February 27 at 6:15 PM.

Caldecott & Newbery Medal Winners

The 2008 Caldecott & Newbery Medal winners have been announced and are coming to a library bookshelf near you! And the winners are...

The Invention of Hugo Cabret: a novel in Words and Pictures by Brian Selznick 2008 Caldecott Medal Winner The Invention of Hugo Cabret, is a 550 page novel in words and pictures. But unlike most novels, the images in my new book don't just illustrate the story. Imagine Paris in the 1930's, a thief, a broken machine, a strange girl, a mean old man, and the secrets that tie them all together... Welcome to The Invention of Hugo Cabret.

Good Masters! Sweet Ladies! written by Laura Amy Schlitz and illustrated by Robert Byrd 2008 Newbery Medal Winner Laura Amy Schlitz wrote these 22 brief monologues to be performed by students at Park School where she is a librarian. In stunning atmospheric watercolors, they bring to life a prototypical English village in 1255. The first-person character sketches build upon each other to create a finer understanding of medieval life. The book is recommended for children age 10 and up.

Bring the entire family to a Winnie-the-Pooh Birthday celebration in honor of author A.A. Milne's Birthday. The event will be held at the Chestertown Branch on Wednesday, January 16 at 6:00 PM, and will feature balloons, a visit from Pooh, music, a puppet show, and more! BOOK SIGNING at Kent County Public Library

Carole Boston Weatherford, author of Moses: When Harriet Tubman Led Her People to Freedom will be making a presentation and signing her books on Wednesday, June 13 at 6:15 PM at the Chestertown Branch of the Kent County Library. Moses received the Caldecott Honor Award for most distinguished American picture book for children. Carole Weatherford has authored 23 books of poetry, nonfiction and children's literature. Sneaks, the library mascot will also be on hand to distribute gameboards for the summer reading club.

Cat in the Hat

The library recently hosted a party for The Cat in the Hat's 50th birthday. Dr. Seuss's the Cat in the Hat attended a pajama storytime with the kids and read stories, danced to songs, and had cupcakes after. There were 81 attendees. Thank you to everyone who came.
