All About 1,000 Books Before Kindergarden

Why should my child participate?

The most important thing you can do to help a child build the skills to become a strong reader is to read together regularly.

Reading 1,000 books together gives you 1,000 opportunities to strengthen those skills! The repetition and consistency is an excellent way to create a lifelong healthy habit of reading.

Kids ages 0-5 who have not yet started kindergarten can sign up online or in-person at any KCPL location.

How to Participate

After you sign up, get started by choosing a book and reading it – it's just that easy! KCPL staff are happy to give personalized book recommendations based on your child's interests, but you and your child can choose any books you want to read.

Each book you read together or someone else reads to your child or your child reads independently counts! If your child has a favorite book they like to read over and over, you can count it each time you read it.

Keep track of each book you read using Beanstack or pick up a 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten booklet at any KCPL location.

Kids will earn a special sticker for every 100 books they read and receive a grand prize when they reach 1,000 books!
